On November 15, 2007, Sam LaFata and
Standard Concrete Products, Inc received the 2007 ACI Award “In
Recognition of Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Concrete
Construction” for the Nokia Theatre at LA Live. The project was
awarded to us by The Conco Companies in November 2005. The
resulting project was a true team effort that included our Inside
Sales staff and our Technical Services Department.
The Nokia Theatre is located on a 5.6 million square
foot development on 27 acres and covers 6 city blocks. The theatre,
which is 235,000 square feet, seats 7,100 at an overall cost of $100
million. No seat in the theatre is farther than 210 feet from the
stage. The stage itself is 180 feet wide and 80 feet deep and is
the largest in the country.
The project broke ground in November 2005. Standard
Concrete began delivering concrete in December 2005 and delivered
27,700 yards from our Vernon Plant. In addition to the Theatre, we
delivered an additional 11,718 yards for the Fire Lane and two
additional buildings.
The uniqueness of the building is its outward
style. The majority of the structure is laid out on a radius with
very few straight lines, in a trapezoidal shape, which is uncommon
for concrete buildings. There are already 125 events planned for
next year, including the grand opening event concert featuring The
Eagles and The Dixie Chicks. On November 18, 2007, Dick Clark
Productions and AEG partnered for the first televised broadcast from
the Nokia Theatre when they hosted The American Music Awards on
November 18th. The Nokia Theatre will be the heart and soul of the
LA Live project.
In late November 2007, we began another phase of the
LA Live Project with Webcor Builders for the Hotel and Residences at
LA Live. Before its completion, we will have delivered another
50,000 yards, including an 8,000 PSI pea gravel mix designed for
upward flowability allowing us to reach the top of the 54-story
structure. The entire new construction of this massive
entertainment center will total over 85,000 yards. We are proud to
have been a part of such a prestigious project.
